Steve Thorne

Representative


Steve Thorne is a qualified architect and urban designer and currently holds the position of Director of Design Urban Pty Ltd. He is Space Syntax’s Representative in Australia, with over 35 years’ practical experience working in Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, South Africa, the UAE, Oman, and China.

Steve has worked in both the private and public sectors holding various positions including Director of Urban Design for the Victorian State Government and Principal Urban Designer at the City of Melbourne. His experience includes practising sustainable urban design from the scale of the city to individual site masterplanning; preparing structure plans, urban regeneration strategies and projects; writing performance-based policy and prescriptive design guidelines, streetscape design and documentation; “safety by design” policy and guidelines; designing and constructing mixed use buildings at varying scales, up to 200,000 square metres NLA; teaching and training in sustainable urban design practice.

He has been directly involved in many urban growth area planning strategies, including the Melbourne 2030, Christchurch Growth Strategy, Auranga growth area in South Auckland, Ginninderry in Canberra, Horsham 2040, and the Baralink Development Plan in South Africa. He has masterplanned many new development areas, townships and activity centres, and written design and development controls for centres across Australia and New Zealand.

Appointments

Steve has sat on a number of professional review panels, including the Abu Dhabi Urban Design Panel, Melbourne Docklands Design Review Panel, Victorian Government Design Advisory Council, the Rouse Hill Project Review Panel, the Port Adelaide Design Review Panel, The North East Link Urban Design Advisory Panel. He is a foundation member of the Office of the Victorian Government Architect’s Design Review Panel, Landcom NSW Design Review Panel and was chairman of the Northern Territory’s Urban Design Advisory Panel (UDAP).


Speaking & training

He has been a speaker at many professional and industry conferences on sustainable urbanism, urban regeneration, design, urban structure, community safety, and transit-oriented development. Steve led a training program in urban design across New Zealand as part of the implementation of the New Zealand Urban Design Protocol. He also ran an urban design training program for the Sultan of Oman’s design office in Oman.

Steve has won numerous international, national and state awards including:

2019  National Landscape Architecture Award – Malop Street Green Spine, in collaboration with Outlines Landscape Architecture.

2018  Australian Institute of Landscape Architects – Urban Design Award of Excellence, central Geelong Laneways Precinct, in collaboration with Outlines Landscape Architecture

2015  Australian Institute of Architecture – Tracy memorial Award – Todd Street Revitalisation, Alice Springs, in collaboration with Susan Dugdale Architects.
